The Great Australian SUV Boom

How SUVs Are Redefining Australia's Automotive Landscape

Kia Sorento

Australia is known for its love of wide-open spaces, rugged terrains, and a lifestyle that values versatility. In the last ten years, SUVs have changed the Australian Car Market. They have moved from a niche family vehicle to the top choice for millions of drivers. But what’s behind this trend, and what does it say about Australia’s evolving relationship with cars?

The Rise of the SUV

SUV sales accounted for over 55% of the new car market in 2023. This marks a significant shift from a decade ago, when sedans and hatchbacks still held a combined majority. The compact SUV segment, which includes models like the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, now sells more than most cars.

This shift isn’t unique to Australia, but people notice it particularly pronounced here. The Australian landscape is large and diverse. Many people love road trips. Because of this, SUVs are a popular choice for buyers.

Why Are SUVs So Popular?

Lifestyle Fit

Australia’s culture places a high value on outdoor activities. SUVs are perfect for road trips, beach days, or country adventures. They have enough space for passengers, pets, and gear.

Their all-terrain abilities offer comfort. This is helpful for people traveling in the countryside and on tough roads. However, people do not always use these abilities.

For people living in the suburbs, mid-sized SUVs offer the best of both worlds. They are easy to drive in city traffic. They are also roomy enough for kids' soccer games and weekend trips.

Safety Features

Safety has become a top priority for Australian car buyers, and SUVs deliver on this front. Their size and height offer better visibility on the road and often lead to better crash-test ratings.

Manufacturers have added advanced driver-assist systems to SUVs. These include lane-keeping aids, blind-spot monitoring, and emergency braking. This makes SUVs a great choice for families who value safety.

Fuel Efficiency Evolution

Vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Kia EV9 show that SUVs can be eco-friendly and useful. This makes them more appealing to a wider audience.

Status Appeal

Beyond being practical, SUVs have become status symbols. Larger, premium models like the Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW X5, or Mercedes-Benz GLS project a sense of success. Even in the mid-range market, SUVs often come with a higher price tag than sedans or hatchbacks, adding to their perceived value.

Are SUVs Too Big for Urban Roads?

While SUVs definitely have appeal, not everyone is on board with their dominance. Critics argue that their size contributes to congestion and parking woes in urban areas. In Sydney and Melbourne, where street parking is already a challenge, larger SUVs can feel unwieldy and inefficient.

However, these criticisms haven’t dented sales figures. Automakers have listened to city critiques. They are now making smaller, more agile SUVs.

Examples include the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Seltos. These cars are better for city living but still offer the same benefits.

SUVs: Redefining Australia’s Roads

As the auto industry moves toward electric vehicles, SUVs continue to lead Australia’s car market. With an increasing focus on sustainability, hybrid and electric SUVs are surging in popularity.

Models like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Atto 3, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 show that SUVs can be strong and good for the environment. These options attract not only traditional SUV buyers but also eco-minded drivers who previously avoided larger vehicles.

Manufacturers are stepping up, making SUVs more efficient, sleek, and tech-savvy. Features like regenerative braking, software updates, and solar charging keep SUVs modern and in demand.

Top Selling SUVs

As of June 2024, the top five best-selling SUVs in Australia are:

  1. Toyota RAV4: 25,405 units sold, marking an 87.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
  2. Mitsubishi Outlander: 14,443 units sold, reflecting a 27.3% growth year-on-year.
  3. Tesla Model Y: 12,516 units sold, indicating a 10.6% decrease from the previous year. It will be interesting to see these figures in 6 months with the introduction of the Leapmotor C10 at over $10,000 less than the Model Y.
  4. Mazda CX-5: 11,920 units sold, showing a 2.7% increase year-on-year.
  5. MG ZS: 11,809 units sold, representing a 13% decline compared to the same period last year.

I'm expecting a very different story come June 2025 with the introduction of many new Electric Vehicle brands to Australia.

Out With The Old, In With The New

SUVs are highly popular in Australia for their versatility and practicality. If you're thinking of selling your SUV, timing can make a big difference in getting the best price. Demand often rises in winter when families and adventurers seek reliable, spacious vehicles for tough weather and road trips.

Features like off-road capability or fuel efficiency can also boost interest, especially during holiday seasons or when fuel prices fluctuate. By aligning your sale with seasonal trends, you can maximise your SUV's value. For more tips, check out our guide on the best time to sell your car.
