When it comes time to sell your car in Brisbane, having the right paperwork is essential. Here are the key documents you'll need to have to sell your car successfully:
A Safety Certificate, or roadworthy certificate, is an important document needed to sell your car in Queensland. This certificate verifies that your vehicle meets the necessary safety standards set by the Queensland Government.
You can find a mechanic or workshop to perform one by searching for an Approved Inspection Station (AIS).
An important document you'll need to sell is the Vehicle Registration Certificate. This certificate serves as proof that you are the legal owner of the vehicle and the main document referred to when we buy cars. It contains important information such as the vehicle's registration number, make and model, and your name as the registered owner.
Make sure you have this document readily available as it will be required by the buyer to complete the transfer of ownership. You can download one via the TMR website or you can request one in person at a TMR Customer Service Centre.
This form is crucial in transferring the ownership of the vehicle from you, as the seller, to the buyer. You'll need to complete the forms for Transferring QLD Rego accurately and ensure that both you and the buyer sign it.
While not a mandatory requirement, providing a Vehicle History Report from CarFacts can add credibility to your car and give confidence to the buyer.
This certificate can display whether or not it's on the Written Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) or stolen, if there's finance owing as well as checking the odometer history to see if there's been a potential rollback. You'll also be provided with a market comparison and will include a standard PPSR report.
For a standard PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) search which can show the vehicles write off status, registration details any security interests, head to PPSRs own government website. The cost of a PPSR search is currently $2 as of December 2024.
If you are selling a financed car, you'll need to obtain a payout figure from your finance provider.
You'll also need to ensure that the proceeds from the sale of the car are enough to cover the outstanding finance amount. Liaise with your finance provider to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any legal complications.
In QLD, you can sell an unregistered car without a RWC, but you and the buyer must take some steps to ensure a smooth sale.
Since the car lacks registration, someone cannot legally drive it on public roads without an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP).
In Queensland, private buyers pay stamp duty based on vehicle type and price during registration, while private sellers are not responsible for these costs.
Dealerships include stamp duty in the total price so the buyer can drive away with the vehicle registered in their name.
Hybrid or Electric - 2% of the dutiable value
1 to 4 cylinders - 3% of the dutiable value
